OutWest decided that it was time to try a new venue, so in September 2004 they held a disco in Westport, Co Mayo, in the Atlantic Coast Hotel.
This proved very successful, with well in excess of 200 people travelling from all parts of Ireland to join in the fun on the night.
To take just one quote, a resident of Westport itself told me: “I have been to gay dances and discos all over Ireland, and even abroad, and I have to say that this was the most enjoyable one I have ever attended.” Praise indeed, all of which should go to the committee of OutWest for all the hard work they put in to organising these events.

OutWest have held a lot of events at this stage so when planning the December disco we decided to have on with a difference.
After looking at our options we decided to have a bouncy castle and a bungy run at the Christmas Disco. A crowd of approx 300 turned up on the night and as always everyone had a good time. Both the bungy run and the bouncy castle were great craic and most people from 18 to 80 had a go.

Castlebar town received a big surprise on Sat 8th of Feb as the largest OutWest event to date took place in the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre. The event was planned for 3 months and was well advertised and this showed as 450 people turned up.
Accommodation in the hotel was fully booked 2 weeks after the date for the disco was arranged but plenty of other reasonable accommodation was available in Castlebar.
Everyone met-up in the academy bar upstairs in the hotel from 8pm on and headed down to the Royal Theatre at about 9pm.By 10 pm the venue was packed and Gloria the Gay and Lesbian choir from Dublin started their performance, which lasted for about 40 minutes. As before Gloria provided a good performance that was very entertaining.
At about 10:40pm the disco started and as always Ace DJ’s from Galway AKA Betty Herring entertained. By this time the venue was packed with people of all ages and gender, everyone was especially surprised by very large amount of young faces there!
OutWest had the usual spot prizes on the night and a 21” TV and video was also raffled.
The hotel provided a late disco licence and the music stopped close to 3am. The resident’s bar remained open till late for those who were staying in the hotel.
Things got hot as a bottle of wine was on offer at the end of the night for the best looking male on the stage to strip off.Things got raunchy as a young fine looking 20-year-old man from Dundalk took up the offer and ended up removing more clothes than he had planned as stood completely naked on the stage, though no-one in the venue was complaining.
OutWest would especially like to thank Gloria for their performance and for Travelling up on the night.
We would also like to thank Ace DJ’s, Zulu’s bar and Strano’s in Galway and anyone else who helped to promote the event in any way by telling their friends, attending displaying posters etc.

October 4th and 5th saw another gay weekend of events in Ballina Co. Mayo. The events were held in the Ridgepool Hotel and this is the third event that OutWest was held there. The part goers started to arrive at the Hotel from about 7pm, some headed straight to the bar while others headed to the leisure centre for a swim to relax beforehand.
Doors opened at 9:30 and everyone slowly left the front bar and heading down to the function room. Betty Herring was first on stage and entertained everyone with music from 70’s to today. Bingo was hosted by Eileen Dover and Tommy Wants It and assistants from Galway and got going at 10pm. Everybody had a good laugh at the Bingo and €300 worth of prizes was given away. After the Bingo entertainment was provided by our in house drag queens for about a half and hour. Karaoke was planned for 12:30am but at this stage everyone had a few pints and was mad to get out on the floor so the karaoke got put to one side. After the disco ended and the bar downstairs closed and most people headed upstairs to the resident’s bar. Everyone had the craic and some of the group entertained us all with their own music. The last of the crowd left the residents bar at about 8am.
The next day some of us got up early and headed into Ballina to do some shopping while other viewed the scenic sights of Co. Mayo. In the evening many of us went out for a meal in preparation for the Sat night Doors opened on the Saturday night at 10pm and entertainment was by Ace DJ’s from Galway AKA “Betty Herring”. The venue was packed with every age group and like Friday night the disco ended at 2:30am and everyone headed up to the residents bar.

OutWest had its last disco on Friday 16th August 2002 aboard the Moon River Cruiser in Carrick on Shannon Co. Leitrim. Again as all OUTWEST events held so far this was another big success. Places were limited to 90 so unfortunately everyone could not be accommodated. Everyone started to board at 8pm and a full bar, Buffet meal; dance area and DJ were all on board.
Ace DJ’s from Galway AKA “Betty Herring” hosted the entertainment. Moon River set sail at 9pm and everyone enjoyed the view as the cruiser travelled along the banks of the River Shannon. This provided an alternative background setting for the OutWest disco. The Buffet meal was served at 10 pm and was provided by the professional Moon River team.
Later that night at 11:30 pm the boat returned to port to collect some hot food, which proved to be very tasty indeed, the cruiser set sail again and the partying continued. The dance floor on the cruiser was packed all night and DJ Betty made sure that the craic kept going. Entertainment was also provided by our resident young lap dancers, which brought a smile to many a face!
The boat trip ended at 1pm and part of the group headed across the road to the local hotel and the rest of the group headed to Rockin Robins Nightclub just out the road. Everyone stayed in B+B’s and hotels in the Carrick On Shannon area.

As you all know OutWest holds monthly meetings in Castlerea Co. Roscommon on the first Tuesday of every month. A safe sex workshop was held at its last meeting on Tuesday 6th August 2002.
Hosted by Orla Nugent of AidsWest in Galway this was a big success and 50 people turned up. The workshop was informative and light hearted and everyone at the meeting felt that they learned more about their sexual health.
