Mission & Values

At OutWest, we believe everyone deserves to feel welcome, respected, and included. We understand rural living can sometimes feel isolating. That’s why we focus on local, person-centred opportunities for the LGBTQ+ community to connect. Through social outings, peer support, and shared interests, we bridge the distance between us.

We are committed to inclusion in its widest sense. Whether you are a lifelong local or new to the region, we are mindful of our community’s diverse backgrounds, identities, and needs. Respect and community spirit guide every cup of coffee we pour and every event we host.

Our Journey (History)

  • 1997: OutWest is founded by a small group of young people in the West of Ireland seeking a space to call their own.
  • 2001: As word spread and confidence grew, OutWest began hosting regular social nights and discos across Connacht, breaking the silence of rural LGBTQ+ life.
  • 2003: We played a pivotal role in establishing the National LGBT Helpline, ensuring support was available to everyone, no matter where they live.
  • 2019 – Present: We reached a major milestone by opening our dedicated drop-in centre. After navigating the challenges of the pandemic, we are now proudly based in Ballina, serving as a hub for the entire region.

Our Team

OutWest is powered by a dedicated Management Committee and a tireless network of volunteers. Every member brings a unique perspective to our mission.

Keeping it Local: OutWest’s Regional Coordinators are our “boots on the ground.” They organise informal gatherings, including coffee mornings and walks, in towns and villages throughout Connacht, making it easier for you to connect without having to travel long distances.

Governance & Transparency

OutWest is a registered not-for-profit organisation. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of financial transparency and accountability.

  • Accountability: Our committee meets regularly to ensure our services remain responsive to the community’s needs.
  • Integrity: All proceeds from donations and events are reinvested into community activities and vital support services.
  • Safety: We maintain clear codes of conduct to ensure OutWest remains a respectful, safe environment for everyone.

Our Partners

OutWest works alongside a range of organisations and community groups to strengthen support for the LGBTQ+ community and stay connected to what is happening across the region. These relationships help us share information, build connections, and contribute to wider community initiatives.

A key part of this involvement is our support for Pride events. OutWest founded Mayo Pride, which has grown into an important and well-supported annual celebration. It reflects the visibility, energy, and sense of community that continues to develop across the region.

We also support and attend Pride festivals across Connacht. These events provide valuable opportunities to meet people, build relationships, and take part in wider community celebrations.

Alongside Pride, we engage with local networks and organisations, helping to strengthen links between groups and ensure that people can access a broad range of supports and activities. This includes connecting with services, sharing information, and collaborating where opportunities arise.

Through these partnerships and community connections, OutWest remains an active and visible part of the wider LGBTQ+ network, both locally and across the region.
