Mayo’s first LGBT+ drop-in centre will open in Castlebar on 18th January 2020.
The centre, run by long-running Connacht-based LGBT+ advocacy group OutWest, will be based in Le Chéile Family Resource Centre and will open for 2 hours each Saturday from 12.45pm to 2.45pm. The centre will provide a relaxed welcoming space for LGBT+ people, families and partners to socialise, chat, and make connections.
Group Chairperson Aurélie said “OutWest are very excited about our new drop-in centre, the first of its kind in Mayo. Being LGBT+ in the West of Ireland can be an isolating experience but there is also wonderful community here. Since 1997 OutWest has been supporting and building the LGBT+ community in the west. Our new drop-in centre is the next step in that process”. Vice-Chairperson John added, “we want the drop-in to be an open and welcoming space for all members of the LGBT+ community and our allies. We will have board games, books, tea and coffee and lots of space for people to relax and hangout. If anyone is interested in getting involved, we’d ask them to get in contact with us at [email protected]”.
In order to make this work, we need volunteers to help staff the Drop-in Centre. If you are interested, please contact us and we will organise to meet with you.
